The topical application of drugs offers many advantages including the ability to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to specific target sites and improved patient compliance. The skin, however, can act as a barrier to the penetration of many active substances. Consequently, the benefits of topical applications are dependent on the right formulation.
Our technologies help improve the stability of semi-solid dosage forms for topical applications including creams, lotions, ointments and gels. They are also used as rheology modifiers to improve emulsion stability, suspend solids, lubricate and retain moisture.
METHOCEL™ products are used in topical liquid pharmaceuticals because they are excellent thickeners (rheology modifier), improve emulsion stability, suspend solids, lubricate and retain moisture. The protective colloid action and emulsifying properties of METHOCEL™ also benefit many semi-solid formulations. The products can be used to prevent droplets and particles from coalescing or agglomerating. METHOCEL™ contributes to film-forming and secondary-thickening properties which improve after-feel and other sensory characteristics in creams and lotions.
WALOCEL™ C polymers can control the rheological (flow) properties in semi-solid dosage forms including ointments, creams, gels and pastes. Whenever viscosity control, water absorption or water retention is required, WALOCEL™ C is an excellent choice.
